New Scientific Study Demonstrates the Potential of ManPas for On-Farm Manure Hygienisation

15 October 2026 | Research & Development

A new peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Sustainability Research provides scientific evidence of the effectiveness of the ManPas system in hygienising animal bedding manure and supporting farm-level circular economy solutions.

Conducted by researchers at LUT University, the study evaluated the ManPas hygienisation system in pilot-scale tests using horse manure mixed with wood- and peat-based bedding, as well as cattle manure containing reed canary grass bedding.

The results demonstrated a substantial reduction in E. coli bacteria. Before treatment, the manure samples contained between 120,000 and 7 million CFU/g. After hygienisation, E. coli levels were either undetectable or below 100 CFU/g.

The research also highlighted the potential to transform bedding manure from a costly waste stream into a valuable local resource. Hygienised manure may be reused as recycled bedding or utilised in soil improvement, while its application as a growing medium requires further development.

The findings support Manpas' approach to decentralised manure treatment: processing organic materials close to their source, reducing dependence on external bedding supplies and creating new opportunities for local material circulation.

The study also identified areas for further development, including post-treatment material handling, process validation and growing medium applications.

The research was conducted by Jarno Föhr, Raghu KC and Tapio Ranta from LUT University's Laboratory of Bioenergy.
